MilkAfric - Lobatse Dairy Biosecurity
MilkAfric has applied the concept of “closed
disease free dairy herd” tested free from diseases such as Tuberculosis,
Brucellosis and applying biosecurity measures to prevent the introduction of disease
into our disease free herds.
In terms of the OIE standards for
compartmentalisation the establishment, approval and maintenance of a disease
free compartment is essentially a ‘management’ agreement between the Botswana Department
of Veterinary Services(DVS), MilkAfric
and our milk processor.
“Biosecurity is the implementation of measures that
reduce the risk of the introduction and spread of disease agents. Biosecurity requires the
adoption of a set of attitudes and behaviours by people to reduce risk in all activities involving
domestic, captive, exotic and wild animals and their products.”
Biosecurity, the implementation of measures that
reduce the risk of the introduction and spread of disease agents, is an
essential tool in disease control. Biosecurity focuses on segregation, cleaning
and disinfection of farms, markets and transport. It can act to prevent the
entry of infection to a population or a premises (bio-exclusion) or to prevent
infection escaping from an infected location (bio-containment).
Disease Free Compartment
‘means an animal subpopulation contained in one or more establishments under a common biosecurity management system with a distinct health status with respect to a specific disease or specific diseases for which required surveillance, control and biosecurity measures have been applied for the purpose of international trade’

As defined by the World Organization for Animal
Health (Office International des Epizooties or OIE), animal traceability means
“the ability to follow an animal or group of animals during all stages
of life”. During an animal disease emergency event,
it may be necessary to locate the source
of the animal(s) in question, the other premises on which the animal(s)
resided, other animals that were exposed, and animals at risk of exposure.
